When someone asks which Frank & Rio shirt to start with, my first question is: how do you want it to feel? The collections share our attention to a polished western shape, but the fabrics and details give each one a different character.
If you’re choosing between Cool Ride Performance, Core, and OG, here’s how I would narrow it down.
Cool Ride Performance: stretch for long, active days
Start here if a lightweight performance feel is your priority. Our Cool Ride shirts are made for movement, with stretch and moisture-wicking fabric that feels different from a structured cotton shirt.
The French Blue Cool Ride shown here has four-way stretch, a tailored shape, longer sleeves and shirttails, and thoughtfully placed buttons. It’s a strong choice when you want the classic look of a button-down and prefer the flexibility of performance fabric.

From a distance, the shirt looks crisp. Up close, the material and the way it moves are the difference. If you spend a lot of time riding or working through a warm day, that may be the deciding factor.
Core: classic cotton and a little personality
Core is where I’d start if you love a more structured cotton feel and a pattern that can do some of the styling for you. The Olive Gingham Core shirt shown here is 100% cotton, with a tailored silhouette and a peacock-inspired accent at the collar and cuffs.

The gingham reads as a classic western pattern. Turn back a cuff and you see the unexpected detail. I’d choose this sort of shirt when I want the fabric itself to make the outfit, whether I’m headed to a show or wearing it with jeans afterward.
Core fabrics and patterns vary by shirt, so check the individual product page for fiber content and care. In particular, don’t assume a cotton gingham will feel stretchy because a Cool Ride shirt does.
OG: the signature western details
OG is the place to look if you’re drawn to the design details that helped define Frank & Rio: the shaped western yoke, tailored lines, and turn-back cuffs. The featured white shirt is our OG Solid White Stretch. Its structured stretch blend makes a clean, versatile look with some give for movement.
An OG shirt can feel quite different from another OG shirt. Our solid white style has stretch; other OG designs include structured cotton. Choose the look you love first, then read that shirt’s fabric details to know what to expect when you put it on.
How I’d choose between the three
- Choose Cool Ride Performance when stretch, lighter weight, and moisture-wicking fabric are at the top of your list.
- Choose Core when you want a classic western pattern and a structured feel, like the cotton Olive Gingham.
- Choose OG when the signature yoke and cuff details are what catch your eye. Check the individual style for its fabric and stretch.
If you’re deciding from photos alone, compare the collar, cuffs, front, and shirttail, then check the fabric and measurements on each product page. The French Blue flat lay below gives you a clear look at the shirt’s shape and length.

Whichever collection you choose, try the shirt in the position where you’ll wear it most. If you ride, reach forward as though you’re holding the reins. Our show shirt fit guide walks through what to check.
